    Description

AMERICAN FRIGATE ESSEX, VINTAGE WOODEN DISPLAY SHIP, SALEM 1799, WITH PLAQUE. USS Essex. Namesake: Essex County, Massachusetts. The first USS Essex of the United States Navy was a 36 guns or 32-gun sailing frigate that participated in the Quasi-War with France, the First Barbary War, and in the War of 1812, during which the British captured her in 1814. She then served as HMS Essex until sold at public auction on 6 June 1837. This American Ship was put into service in 1799. This exquiste design, construction, rigging, and armament has hightly detailed parts throughout the ship. Also shows a very very unique perspective of the construction of wooden vessels in the New England coastal states. Has a good degree of detail from the selection and hand-squaring of the timbers used for the keel, the assembly of the two layers of the keel, the selection, cutting, and lifting of the hull ribs, steaming and fixing the hull planking, hand hammer caulking the planks with waxed cording. Just like the original ships built in 1799. Wonderful detailed collectible which chronicles shipbuilding that has virtually vanished. Ship measures approximately 14 inches by 20 inches which is on wooden display plaque which is 24 1/2 inches long. (14 inches in Height (from the bottom of the ship to the tip of the middle sail) and 20 inches is the length from stern to stern). Shelf displayed for over 30 years. In Excellent Condition. GREAT GIFT! Neat Collectible Item. See Photo Image. Scanned Image is not as clear as original item. I ACCEPT PAYPAL.
