ANTIQUE ENAMEL DECORATED BLUE INVERTEDTHUMBPRINT PICKLE CASTOR IN MERIDEN FRAME
Available for purchase is an antique pickle castor made during the late 1800s. During Victorian days, pickle castors were a common table accessory used to display and serve small pickles and relishes. This particular pickle castor has a blue glass insert in the "Inverted Thumbprint" pattern. The glass is beautifully decorated with an enamel floral pattern. Since many different glass companies made the Inverted Thumbprint pattern, the maker of this piece is unknown. The insert has a bulging base and a cylindrical neck. It stands about 4 1/4" tall (not including lid) and the widest portion of the body measures approximately 4".
The silverplate frame was made by the Meriden Silver Plate Company in Meriden, Connecticut during the last quarter of the 19th century. The frame is numbered "648" and has ornate feet with the face of a bearded man, possibly a mythological figure. The frame stands about 10 1/4" tall and measures approximately 5 3/4" wide. The glass insert and frame are a "married" set, since the base of the pickle jar doesn't fit snugly into the base. I purchased this pickle castor at a recent estate sale. It's guaranteed to be an antique Victorian-era set and NOT a modern reproduction.
Please check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.
Condition of this antique pickle castor is EXCELLENT with no chips or cracks. The glass insert has some very minor rim roughness along the top edge, as well as some wear to the gold trim on top and bottom. The enamel flower decoration is completely intact. The metal frame has some discoloration and wear to the silverplate, as well as a monogram near the base. Overall, this pickle castor looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase!
